The festival of Onam originates from the state of Kerala. According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. This festival that is celebrated over a period of days, is one of the most important festivals for the people of Kerala. One of the highlights of Onam is the sadya spread on Onam. The Onam sadya, is a traditional meal consisting of 24 items spread out on a banana leaf, cooked Kerala style. The specialties of these dishes are in the unique way they are made.
